There was a cut take where instead of just kissing them the same amount

Barrowman just kept kissing and leaning into Eccleston, until they both fell over

I love that the Doctor is so chill with it. He’s not necessarily attracted to Jack but there’s zero gay panic. He’s totally willing to accept a kiss as a gesture of goodwill.

I wish there was more modeling of that kind of chillness on TV.

This is the stuff that happens when you have a showrunner who thinks it’s important to not just have non-straight relationships, but to treat them like they’re no big deal BECAUSE THEY AREN’T. Remember that bit in “Midnight” where the Doctor’s talking to his seatmate, and she mentions she just lost someone, and refers to the person as “she” totally casually because it’s not a big deal? Because the character is totally fucking heartbroken and that’s the big deal? Because the conversation is really about two grieving people traveling alone who find a small moment of kinship in spite of being so walled-off that they can barely talk about what’s hurting them? Hearts, hearts, hearts.

Not to mention when Harkness makes a “tear me off a piece of that” crack and the Doctor says:

… and follows with possibly the world’s most impish smile.

I don’t see much of that kind of acceptance in popular media, and it makes me twitchy. It’s not a “member of a minority looking for things to be offended by,” either (gross, why would anyone say that, anyway); I’m straight, and most of my friends are straight. But not all of them. What I see on TV — “OOOOOH, that person is GAYYYY, how do we feel about that, let’s make the show about that instead” — makes me twitch. That’s not what my life looks like and that’s not how people treat the people they trust and like. I don’t care about the genders of who my friends sleep with; I care way more about whether or not my friends sleep with jerks.

(Sorry that I can’t haul in other shows for comparison, but the only other thing I watched recently all the way through was “How I Met Your Mother,” and much as I love the show, Lily’s creepering at Robin makes me squirm.)

(Also, you think Doctor Who analysis is nerdy, just get four drinks into me and get me going about Hamlet.)
